In tune with the times: part 2

Ref: C2338452

History through operettas and musicals, including Gypsy, Guys and Dolls, Silk Stockings, Chicago, Singin' in the Rain, Miss Saigon. The course will examine political, cultural and social issues that form the basis of the plots, and how the historical contexts in which they were written have affected views of history portrayed in the shows themselves. We will assess how differently such material might have been treated in today's political and cultural climate. We will also consider the contrast between today's blockbuster musicals and those of the past, and how audience's expectations of musicals have changed. With film clips and musical extracts.
