If you are interested in learning how to sew or make garments this course is perfect for you. You will learn how to use the sewing machine and make a number of garments including a dress and skirt or a project of your choice. You will learn how to sew and finish your seams, put in zips and learn how to make darts and pleats. Alternatively you can bring your own sewing projects to work on and get help with them.

Course aim

This course is aimed at both beginners and those who already have sewing knowledge. They will be able to learn a range of new skills in sewing and dressmaking or get help on the projects that you wish to complete.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To thread up and use the sewing machine.
  • To work from a commercial pattern.
  • To measure and cut out dress making patterns.
  • To sew and finish seams.
  • To complete a range of dress making techniques including, inserting zips and adding darts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You will be given a guide at the beginning of the course and told what you need to bring each week.
