Sewing Machine Skills for Intermediate Level

We will cover all of the basic skills you will need to create patterns which will enable you to make clothes that are made to measure. Previous experience of pattern drafting won't be necessary for this course however prior knowledge of measurements and basic sewing techniques would be preferred. Students will learn how to use over lock machine also.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to expand sewing knowledge of students with some prior exposure to the field. Topics covered will consist of patterns, drafting and professional finishing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is designed for people with some (basic level) knowledge on sewing.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Build on my current knowledge on sewing
  • Confidently use an over lock machine.
  • Produce patterns and drafting.
  • Apply professional finishing on to a garment
  • Apply professional finishing on to a garment. Use measurements to produce a complete garments.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The languages will be used in teaching sessions will consist of English, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and Mirpuri.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Students will have one to one meetings with their tutor for specific advice and feedback.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A basic sewing kit would be preferable to bring along with you.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Some previous knowledge of sewing will be required on this course. For example, measurement taking and basic pattern marking.
