Vintage Inspired Sewing

This course will enable you to learn how to make a range of items including, aprons, bags and cushions. You will learn how to give them a vintage feel with re-cycled fabric, embellishing with trims/buttons/beads and decorative techniques to make them stand out from the crowd.

Course aim

Learn how to sew a range of items with a vintage twist. For example, adding decoration with crochet trim and doilies, patchwork techniques and re-using vintage fabrics into new items.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make a half apron with patch pocket.
  • Make a patchwork tote bag.
  • Make a cushion decorated with applique.
  • Embellish using vintage trims, doilies, buttons and beads.
  • Re-cycle existing clothing/vintage fabrics into new items.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Equipment is provided at the venue but you will be expected to bring your own material and you will be given a guide to let you know what to bring each week.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
