Mixed Textile Crafts Improvers

This course is aimed at those wanting to develop and expand upon existing craft and sewing skills. We will cover a range of crafts including, applique, machine and hand embroidery, printing on to fabrics and wet and needle felting.

Course aim

A course for those with previous crafts/sewing experience looking to learn new crafts and develop existing skills and knowledge.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Confidently use a sewing machine to create decorative designs using applique, including cut back and 3-D work.
  • Create wet felt work including flat sheets and shapes using a resist.
  • Embellish with needle felting, creating intricate designs and 3-D shapes.
  • Use a range of different printing techniques including lino printing and stencilling.
  • Embellish your work with free machine embroidery and hand embroidery.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Equipment is provided by the venue or tutor. You are expected to bring your own materials or they will be available to buy from the tutor. You will be given a guide of what you need to bring each week.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
