Mixed Sewing Skills

Students will learn a range of hand and machine sewing techniques and have the opportunity to create a variety of projects which will help them practice and develop their sewing skills. They will have the chance to create a variety of Christmas themed projects, if they wish, or be supported in making something of their own choice. They will also have the opportunity to develop other skills such as embroidery, patchwork, costume making etc through completion of small tasks and larger projects of their choosing. Students will be encouraged to share skills and their work with fellow students if comfortable to do so.

Course aim

This course aims to provide basic sewing skills for beginners and improving technique for those with more experience.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a variety of hand and machine sewing techniques to create craft items
  • Identify the appropriate sewing technique for the material being used and the item being created
  • Cut from commercial patterns, understanding the symbols and sizing and adapting patterns to fit.
  • Use of a variety of sewing machine feet to insert zips, make button holes, attach buttons etc.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students to provide own basic sewing equipment eg dress making scissors, stitch unpicker, pins, hand sewing needles, tape measure plus fabrics, threads, and commercial patterns as needed. Can bring own sewing machines (need current PAT certificate)
