Exploring botanical drawing and painting

This is an introduction and exploration of Botanical drawing and painting plants, using traditional drawing and water colour painting techniques. All levels will be catered for, including beginners, in this friendly and relaxed class.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide learners with the necessary skills to observe, draw and paint plants using various techniques and mediums. Learners will be encouraged to develop and explore their own artistic skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Observe and draw various natural subjects
  • Use water colour paints to portray plant material using traditional botanical painting techniques
  • Experiment with composition and design in my drawings and paintings
  • Produce at least one new piece of work this term
  • Confidently make decisions about materials, mediums and equipment when creating new artwork

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will be expected to provide their own materials and equipment as the term progresses, however these can be borrowed from WEA at the start of the term.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
