Astronomy: reading heavens, understanding the stars and night sky

How do you find your way around the night sky? How to stars and planets form? Depending on time we shall also look at planets orbiting other stars and discuss some aspects of modern astronomy. We shall use discussions and tutorials and since this is designed to be a practical course it is hoped (weather permitting) to be able to observe some of these objects using telescopes owned by the Lincoln Astronomy Society

Course aim

The aim is to introduce learners to the night sky, life and death of stars, the formation of planetary systems and an introduction to cosmology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Recognize common constellations.
  • 2 Be able to use a planisphere
  • 3 be able to understand the workings and use a telescope
  • 4 Show a basic understanding of the life history of some kinds of stars
  • 5 Have an understanding of galaxies.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
