The course will assume no prior knowledge of computing and is intended for absolute beginners with little or no experience of using computers, or for learners who want to gain more skills, knowledge and confidence in using computers.

Course aim

The main aim of this course is to help you to gain skills and confidence with using the computer, (using Office) and for the course to be an enjoyable one for you.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course consists of an introduction to computers. This course will consist of identifying all the different parts of the computer, using Microsoft Word in order to create and format documents, as well as using the Internet and emails.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • get familiar with the computer system, and understand more about hardware and software
  • use the keyboard and mouse to input information
  • use Microsoft Word to create, save and format documents
  • use the Internet to search for information
  • be introduced to using emails

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • Students will demonstrate learning and progress through satisfactorily completing course related tasks. Feedback will be provided to each learner at the completion of each task.

What else do I need to know?

  • For the basic IT course the learners will not need to bring any additional resources as they will be provided. They could bring a personal notebook and pen to make their own notes while learning on the course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Upon completing the course, the learners could progress onto a course to develop more skills.
