The course will explore the origins, development and implementation of antisemitism from the birth of Christianity to the Final Solution.The negative depiction of the Jews built into European culture and the transmission and dissemination of hateful stereotypes of " the Jew" across the centuries will be examined using examples drawn from the frequent explosion of anti-Jewish violence.to help understand why Jews in Europe were persecuted.Finally, the catalysts of 19th Century antisemitism that Hitler was able to exploit will be studied leading to the emergence of Nazi ideology, the creation of the racial state and genocide against the Jews.

Course aim

To study the rise of anti-semitism, through an understanding of the origins and dominance of Christianity and explore key explosions of anti-Jewish violence and prejudice which Hitler was able to manipulate, culminating in the final solution.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Anyone with an interest in the origins,development and implementaion of the Holocaustas a warning from History.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know about the early seeds of antisemitism sown during the origins and spread of Christianity
  • Understand the reasons why Jews were persecuted throughout history and the frequent explosions of anti-Jewish violence
  • Be able to account for the rise of the Nazi racial state, the extent of collaboration and analyse the inevitability of the Final solution
  • Consider the echoes of Genocide in the 21st Century, Holocaust denial and conlusions that can be drawn from the way in which the world responded to the persecution and mass murder of the Jews.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • • A desire to learn about the topics being studied • A willingness to share ideas and contribute within a mutually supportive environment • Pen, paper or recording equipment
