Intermediate Spanish

Further improve your conversation skills in Spanish: gain more knowledge and confidence when speaking in the present, past and future and learn how to express yourself more fluently. Investigate the culture and traditions of the country and increase your vocabulary by learning popular proverbs and sayings. Understand different styles of Spanish through work with texts such as newspaper/magazine articles and internet material. Specific topics for the term will be negotiated further with students at the first session.

Course aim

To consolidate Spanish learned in the first two years' of study and to extend knowledge of grammar and structures, whilst building confidence and fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Returning students have at least two years' previous study (six 11-week terms) or equivalent knowledge/experience of the language.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use all time-frames more confidently in conversation, and begin to incorporate use of the pluperfect tense.
  • Increase underpinning knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and grammar
  • Recall current, popular Spanish sayings and proverbs and understand their cultural origins.
  • Express opinions and preferences in social situations, for example in shops, restaurants, hotels etc. and write letters of compliment/complaint.
  • Demonstrate an increased knowledge of transport and travel vocabulary to cover air/car travel, coping with breakdowns, etc.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
