Love Theatre- will travel

The course will be held at the Mechanics on some Wednesdays, 10.30-12.30. In between classes there will be visits to theatre, Sheffield, Manchester etc., not forgetting Nottingham. (Group rates are favourable but extra to cost of course) Topics will be wide ranging depending on theatre availability. Contemporary versions of Chekhov and Ibsen already booked. Classes will examine key speeches, ideas, relating them to our lives. Guests may be a highlight.

Course aim

The aim is visit theatre wherever we decide it is exciting, interspersed with classes to inform discuss and debate

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for those with a love of theatre who want to belong to a group with the specific intention of travelling to theatre, discussing and debating the shared events in order to illuminate the whole experience.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the plays and productions seen
  • Talk confidently about the experiences
  • Exchange views with other profitably, gaining from a shared sense of enthusiasm
  • Widen awareness of issues round the productions
  • Learn to share research and points of interest around the productions with others, eg, reviews found or other material on line or in written material

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be spending time outside the classes visiting/ travelling to theatres, perhaps researching before and after.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be continually assessing your own progress through sharing ideas with others, and because of the nature of the course you will spend more time with your fellow students and tutor for this activity.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • It may be that you will want to read the plays seen before or afterwards

What can I do next?

  • The course will hopefully lead to a pointing of the mind, and an enthusiasm for living in a thoughtful way.
