Elements of Fiction Writing

Ref: C2338103

Being a writer is often a lonely, solitary activity with limited opportunity to share one's creations. Sharing your work-in-progress with like-minded creative-types will help you develop your writing, giving it depth, whilst letting your individual style shine through. This course is structured around the main elements of fiction writing and will consider the development of character, plot, theme, style and point-of view, as well as dialogue and the use of contemporary literary devices.

Course aim

This course aims to give writers with some experience guidance around structuring longer pieces of fiction, and developing the stylistic elements of their work, in a friendly and sharing environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Those attending should have a clear idea about the project that they would like to work on, and should come with some elements of their work in a rough draft form.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main elements of fiction writing.
  • Apply the main elements of fiction writing to my piece of work.
  • have confidence in sharing my work-in-progress within a group setting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • It is hoped that in attending the course, all participants will be motivated to continue the development of their pieces of fiction writing away from the classroom setting.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring notes, musings, thought-showers, scribblings... any evidence of your work-in-progress, to develop during the sessions. There will be lots of activities to help you develop your skills in each element of fiction writing.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • It is anticipated that the participants will continue to develop their fiction writing. Information on competitions and resources for writers will be made available.
