This course will explore a wide range of Art & the way that we look at & understand paintings. Some sessions are planned to be gallery based (in Sheffield & Doncaster, transport not provided). Join us to discover how Art interests & inspires, fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

This course will explore a wide range of Art, illustrated by digital images & collections in some Art Galleries (it is planned to include visits to Doncaster Art Gallery & Sheffield's Graves Gallery, transport not included)with discussion.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1) Contribute to constructive discussion
  • 2) Discuss & analyse paintings
  • 3) Understand the background to artists & paintings
  • 4) Consider different Genres of Art
  • 5) Realise the range of paintings held in the collections of the galleries visited

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be of use to make notes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • A list of useful background reading will be provided during the course
