On this course we will explore the ideas behind the re-drawing of maps and borders in the late 19th and 20th centuries and examine the consequences of these changes. We will look at historical maps of the Eastern Mediterranean and think about events and ideas before and after WWI, which effected the borders of countries in this area.

Course aim

This course aims to provide a context for problems caused by historical decisions made as part of colonial ambitions in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand more about how drawing lines on maps relates to world history
  • Describe some of the consequences of drawing lines on maps
  • Identify at least two Orientalist artists and their work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
