Beginners ~ Mosaics Incorporating Handmade Tiles

This course offers the opportunity to create truly unique pieces of mosaic art. Using a variety of different types of clay, learners can hand make their own tiles ready to be fired and incorporated into their own designs. These can be used in conjunction with a variety of other materials, such as glass tiles, ceramic and crockery.

Course aim

This course aims provide foundations for the principles of making mosaics. Learners will also be encouraged to create their own handmade tiles using clay which will be fired off site.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the differences in the types of clay used for making tiles.
  • Be able to make tiles, suitable to use in a mosaic.
  • Design a mosaic incorporating hand made ceramic tiles.
  • Know how to cut and shape a variety of materials used for making mosaics.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
