Poet of the Month

Ref: C2338034

If you enjoy poetry or want to know more, come along to these informal and interactive monthly sessions. In September we will be reading a selection of poems by John Keats, together with some by his admirer and biographer Andrew Motion. On this occasion we shall draw up a list of poets and topics for the six months to follow, for which your suggestions will be welcome.

Course aim

The aim of this course is both to introduce students to the lives and work of great poets past and present, and to remind ourselves of poets whose work we have enjoyed in the past.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Read poetry with a greater understanding of its content and context.
  • 2. Appreciate how poetry in English has changed over time.
  • 3. Broaden my tastes in poetry and enjoy leaving my comfort zone occasionally.
  • 4. Understand some of the techniques and linguistic patterns that distinguish poetry from prose.
  • 5. (Optional) Choose and present to the group a poem I admire, or write a poem or prose text of my own inspired by one of the poets covered by the course.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • The poetry for each session will be presented in booklet form, but students are welcome to bring books and printed poems with them.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
