Book of the Month

The group will discuss in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere the books under consideration, looking into treatment of material in fiction and non-fiction, insight into time and place, narrative, style and presentation of character. Books are agreed by the group and usually supplied by the library service. We read one book per month. The books selected are usually by well known authors.

Course aim

The aim is to discuss seven contemporary and respected books, chosen by the group, individually and in relation to each other, drawing out differences of subject-matter, style and appeal.The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Become familiar with the selected authors' writing style, themes and body of work.
  • Relate your own reading experiences to those of the other class members.
  • Basic awareness of how to critique fiction.
  • Identify passages which illustrate an author’s methods, style and literary skills.
  • Extend the scope of your reading choices.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Members are expected to read one book per month in order to discuss at the next class. Books will be critiqued in class by group and whole class discussion, guided by the teacher.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The tutor is always available for one-to-one time at the end of each club meeting.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • The first book of the month in October will be NW, by Sadie Smith. So if you are new to the club please try to read it beforehand. Subsequent books will be agreed by the group.

  • Please read the first book before first class.

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
