Introduction to Tai Chi and Health Qigong Level 1

This form of exercise combines body movement and mental stimulation. The gentle movements energise the body without putting undue strain on joints and muscles. Practised regularly, these exercises will help to relieve stress and tension, help body balance and increase a general sense of well being.

Course aim

To aid relaxation and balance and improve health with Tai Chi and Health Qigong and through regular practice progress towards achieving health benefits, including better posture and better stability.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • practice the basic postures and mindfulness of Yang style Tai Chi, 8 step and 24 step.
  • carry out the principle movements of the 8 step and the first and second sections of the 24 step Yang style Tai Chi.
  • demonstrate the correct way to transfer body weight in the forms.
  • incorporate the breathing in the basic Eight Treasures and the Ba Duan Jin Health Qigong sets.
  • describe how Health Qigong is used in the origin of Chinese Medicine.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will learn the forms and exercises by following the tutor and, with practice, be encouraged to try them out yourself. You will also be encouraged to try them out at home.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The tutor will offer encouragements and indicate areas of correction where needed. The tutor will also give out handouts from time to time appropriate to what is being learnt.

What else do I need to know?

  • Loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Flat soft comfortable footwear, not just socks. You may wish to bring a drink.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Videos and books are not necessary, but can be purchased through the tutor if the student thinks it may be of benefit.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Continued practice will help maintain levels of fitness and many health benefits.
