Students will have many opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of French through exploration and discussion of a wide variety of topics, chosen by members of the group. Everyone will be supported and encouraged to ask questions, seek clarification and express their opinions in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere.

Course aim

To build on previous knowledge of French, however rusty; explore a variety of topics; plug gaps in vocabulary and grammar so that students become more confident and fluent French speakers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Previous knowledge gained at school or from living, working or holidaying in a French- speaking country.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss and debate a variety of topics in French
  • Develop the language needed to express opinions
  • Speak everyday French with confidence and fluency
  • Use a range of up to date colloquial French words and phrases
  • Speak French with a more authentic French accent

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • All students will be encouraged to conduct their own further research into the topics discussed in class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be voluntary homework tasks set after each class which will be marked and returned. Students will also have the opportunity to make presentations to the rest of the group.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Please bring with you a list of topics you would like the group to explore and also details of any points of language you would like to practise.
