From Gauguin's Impressionist years through the vibrant images of modern life of the Scottish Colourists, to the landscape visions of Paul Nash, we explore some of the themes and variations in the works of a range of artists active in the first half of the twentieth - one of the most exciting periods in the history of art!

Course aim

We explore some themes and variations in the work of a range of artists active in the first half of the twentieth century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • No previous experience is necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognize some of the different themes and variations on themes discussed in the course
  • Identify how and why some of themes evolved
  • Recognize some of the key characteristics of the works under discussion
  • Evaluate the impact of some of the major aesthetic, cultural, political and social influences on the works discussed

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Tutor-led presentation followed by group tasks when students may analyse and interpret colour copies of paintings in small group

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Progress will be monitored by the tutor continuously through the group tasks in each session and during feedback of findings

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder in which to keep handouts which will be offered at each session

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • booklists and relevant website details will be given at each session
