Castles, Weapons and Warfare

Do you know your barbican from your bailey, postern from plinth? Our course looks at the history, development and key features of a castle. It then continues by looking at the development in warfare, weapons and armour and how changes in warfare reflects the decline in importance of castles.

Course aim

This course will introduce students to the development of military architecture, weapons and warfare in England in the medieval period.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main features of a castle
  • Identify and explain the main milestones in the development of castles
  • Identify and describe the main milestones in the development of medieval weapons and warfare
  • Compare and contrast warfare at the beginning and end of the medieval period
  • Compare development of castles weapons and warfare in England to the rest of Europe

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A notebook and pen will be required to make notes. Some of the original documents used are in small feint script - tell your tutor if you prefer a transcript or enlargement.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
