The Four Georges

Ref: C2337985

The period between 1714 and 1830 is one of considerable interest to historians of the British monarchy. During these reigns the King was actively involved not only in the conduct of affairs in Britain, but exercising an effective role in the government of a significant part of Germany. The course will look at the issues raised by such topics as the difficulties created for British ministers when the King wished to spend some time in Hanover. The Regency Crises during the reign of King George III throw considerable light upon the extent of the personal power of the Monarch. Topics covered 1 to put the British monarchs between 1714 and 1830 into their correct political and social background; 2 to illustrate the necessity of understanding the bias with which historians have approached these years; 3 to examine the significance of the King of Britain having responsibilities in Britain, Germany and the overseas empire.
