Beginners Sewing Skills

This course will cover a range of sewing skills enabling students to work on aspects such as applique, free machine embroidery, patchwork, inserting zips and bag making to practice the skills learnt and make a number of projects throughout the course. There will also be a number of weeks towards the end of the course when students can work on projects of their own choice to further practice the skills and take them further.

Course aim

Give Students an understanding of a variety of sewing skills and how these can be used across a range of sewing projects

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sew machine applique using bondaweb
  • Make a fully lined bag
  • Insert a zip into an item
  • Sew with a range of materials, learning how to use the machine to the best with each
  • Learn how to sew button holes using the technique in a project of choice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, tape measure and threads will be required. Each week small amounts of fabric will be used which can either used from donated supplies or be purchased new or charity shops are a great resource.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
