This course will cover further dressmaking skills including more challenging techniques on a wide range of fabrics using a range of sewing machines.

Course aim

To teach intermediate dressmaking skills including more challenging techniques on a wide range of fabrics using a range of sewing machines.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • You will need to know how to use a sewing machine and have made several garments before.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Students will understand the properties of a wide range of fabrics
  • 2 Students will be able to fit and adjust commercial Dressmaking patterns
  • 3 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate further seam and construction techniques
  • 4 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to clone a garment and use a dummy
  • 5 Students will be able to use an overlocker machine to sew stretch fabric

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a sewing kit of scissors, pins, tape measure, chalk, sewing threads, needles & a quick unpick. Sewing machines, overlockers, irons, ironing boards and tailors dummies are provided.
