From the Ice Age to Stone Age

In this course we will journey from the Ice Age through to the Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age. We will examine sites such as Creswell Crags, Happisburgh, Bouldnor Cliff and Star Carr to investigate what they can tell us about life in prehistoric Britain and compare them to sites elsewhere in Europe.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to examine sites such as Creswell Crags, Happisburgh, Bouldnor Cliff and Star Carr to investigate what they can tell us about life in prehistoric Britain and compare them to sites elsewhere in Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss what is meant by the terms ‘Palaeolithic’ and ‘Mesolithic’ and when they were
  • List at least three Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites
  • Discuss how the landscape was used by our ancestors during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic
  • Describe what it would have been like to live during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners will require a notepad and pen. They may also find it useful to have a folder in which to store handouts and notes.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
