The twentieth century saw some of the most exciting, challenging and powerful work in the history of art - and Italy was no exception. Explore the paintings of a range of artists including the pastoral landscapes of Giovanni Segantini, the mysteries of Giorgio de Chirico and the portraits of Modigliani. No experience necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!

Course aim

To explore the work of a range of Italian artists active during the twentieth century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • No previous experience is necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognize some of the major works of some of the artists under discussion
  • Identify some of the key characteristics of these works
  • Evaluate some of the major historical, social, political and cultural influences on the work of Italian artists during this period

How will I be taught?

  • Tutor-led presentation will be followed by group tasks when students may analyse and interpret colour copies of paintings

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Progress will be monitored on a continuous basis through group tasks and during feedback of findings

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder would be useful to keep handouts from each session

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Booklists and relevant websites will be given at each session
