Enhance your skills in Creative Writing

The course is taught by a published writer, and encourages writers to really explore their potential - via a series of exercises in poetry and prose. It looks at how writing works, and what is needed to make words work as atmospherically as possible. Students will also consider how best to edit and polish work, and how and where to send work out, should they so desire.

Course aim

This course is about expanding and improving your creative writing techniques via exploration of ideas and exercises.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create writing that makes the most of atmosphere and pace.
  • Recognise key creative writing techniques in poetry and prose.
  • Recognise how to edit and polish work.
  • Know where to send work out to, should you so wish.
  • Identify what constitutes a memorable poetic image.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • pen, paper, folder etc. Writer's notebook, whether paper or electronic.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Tutor's new books: Brand New Beat: Stories Set in the 1960s/ Mr Bowlly Regrets: Poems, both King's England, 2017.
