or over a thousand years the politics and the affairs of Central Europe were controlled by and through the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. And even when the Empire had been dissolved its memory dominated Central Europe for over a century. Although it developed a complicated structure of officers and honours it stood apart from the state structures that emerged elsewhere; evolving a procedure whereby powerful geographically-based territorial Princes chose from amongst their number a monarch whose authority they then did their best to minimise The course will look at the various ways in which individual Emperors tried to extend their influence and how they reacted to the various political and religious crises they had to face. It will also show how the Princes were able to consolidate their own internal powers and lay the foundations of the modern Central European state structure.

Course aim

to explore and examine a thousand years of the politics of Central Europe as defined by and through the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • comment on the origins of the Medieval Empire;
  • describe the controversies between Pope and the Emperor;
  • comment on the dissolution and aftermath of the Empire;
  • understand the influence of the Empire on the wider political development across Europe.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • A mixture of lecturing, informal discussion, and question and answer. Distribution of handouts and bibliographies as required and relevant.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
