Germany and the Holy Roman Empire

Ref: C2337910

or over a thousand years the politics and the affairs of Central Europe were controlled by and through the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. And even when the Empire had been dissolved its memory dominated Central Europe for over a century. Although it developed a complicated structure of officers and honours it stood apart from the state structures that emerged elsewhere; evolving a procedure whereby powerful geographically-based territorial Princes chose from amongst their number a monarch whose authority they then did their best to minimise The course will look at the various ways in which individual Emperors tried to extend their influence and how they reacted to the various political and religious crises they had to face. It will also show how the Princes were able to consolidate their own internal powers and lay the foundations of the modern Central European state structure.
