Explore in great detail the pictorial drama of light and shadow. This Classic technique Course will allow learners will gain a greater understanding of the historical significance of this technique, drawing inspiration from artists such as Caravaggio, Matisse, Morandi and Magritte. Learners will uncover different approaches to working with light and shadow, using still life, the figure and directional lighting. This course aims to guide the learner to explore different ways of looking at and drawing subjects through the means of Chiaroscuro - Light and Shadow - analysing and assessing 'high contrast' and its effects. Learners will be exploring this subject with many techniques using dry and wet mediums such as charcoal, chalks and inks.

Course aim

During this course learners will explore the technique known as Chiaroscuro, 'light and shadow', used by artists from the Renaissance onward to create a sense of drama and the illusion of volume.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand and explain the technique of Chiaroscuro
  • comment on the historical significance of the technique of Chiaroscuro
  • analyse and implement practical ways of portraying light and shadow within their own work
  • Analyse and implement ways of observing subjects and surface, and put these into practice
  • further develop their own 'drawing' techniques through experimentation.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
