The course is taught by a published writer and aims to convey their knowledge and experience of writing to others. The idea behind the course is to expand writers' techniques and knowledge of the tools that will really improve writing. The course will also consider how best to edit and polish work, and how to send work off, should you wish to do so.

Course aim

This course aims to provide writers with the skills and ideas to explore their creative writing, and improve their techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise key ideas in creative writing.
  • Identify your strengths as a writer.
  • Identify what constitutes your writing 'voice.'
  • Recognise how to edit and polish work.
  • Learn what markets are suitable for your work, should you so wish.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • pens, paper, folder etc. Keep a writer's notebook, whether this be paper or electronic.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Tutor's new books: Brand New Beat: Stories set in the 1960s/ Mr Bowlly Regrets: Poems, both King's England, 2017.
