Treasures of the Midlands

You may have heard of Tutankhamun's tomb and Pompeii, but did you know there have been some amazing discoveries made right on your doorstep? From the coins of the Hallaton Hoard to the Saxon gold of the Staffordshire Hoard and a medieval boar badge that moved a battlefield, this course will introduce you to some of these great local finds.

Course aim

The course aims to introduce learners to a number of significant archaeological discoveries made in the Midlands region.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify some of the significant archaeological discoveries made in the Midlands region;
  • Discuss the nature of those discoveries and how they came to be made;
  • Evaluate the significance of those discoveries to the study of life in the Midlands in the past
  • Describe the Portable Antiquities Scheme and how it works

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will take a topical approach with each session focusing on a different treasure.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Essential reading will be provided. Learners will require a notepad and pen. They may also find it useful to have a folder in which to store handouts and notes.

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
