A Taste of Psychology

To gain some knowledge and understanding of this fascinating subject, each session will cover a particular issue or topic from the wide and exciting remit of psychology. We will discuss the relevance of psychology to everyday life – helping us to understand ourselves and others better.

Course aim

To give students a basic understanding of classical human Psychology, compare how different types of psychologists have explained human behaviour and enable students to better understand themselves and others,, and to interact effectively.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • discuss the basic understanding of different psychological perspectives and a clear preference.
  • explain, with examples, an extra dimension to my existing understanding of human behaviour, self and others.
  • apply the insights and techniques learned to achieve more harmonious and effective communication and interaction with others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The course will be interactive, with brief tutor presentations, some open questions to stimulate thought and discussion.

What else do I need to know?

  • Notepads and pens would be useful and possibly a folder for handouts.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No essential textbook is necessary but students may wish to supplement the course by reading a Psychology textbook designed for up to GCSE level, e.g. by Davenport or Barbara Woods.

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
