Day School:Walk your Way to Better Health: Victorian Urban Development

Ref: C2225434

This morning course will explore how Cambridge developed in the nineteenth century, beyond its medieval core. We'll begin by comparing the maps that show this growth, along with other documents that tell us more about the population and the economy of the town, and the parallel stories of the town and the University. Our walk will then take us east from Bridge Street, including some key buildings, terraces and across the common to Newmarket Road and then back through the fascinating history of the Kite area, considering some of the institutions that sprang up to cater for this new population. It's a history that can be compared to other towns in that era, for similarities and differences. The walk is entirely on tarmac paths and streets, but the riverside and common will give us a green interlude away from main roads.
