In the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, Henry Tam will explore what should be done to revive democracy. Against the suggestion that democracy has run its course, he will share a wide range of ideas beyond the usual ‘get the vote out’ proposals, unpack why democratic governance is indispensable, and put forward recommendations to help us avoid the twin threats of oppressive rule and debilitating chaos.”

Course aim

“To govern ourselves or not to? The existential question of politics. Distrust, alienation, and extremism, make it more difficult than ever to secure democratic self-rule.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Participate in discussions around the key elements of contemporary democracy.
  • Formulate a personal opinion of the position of contemporary democracy
  • Feel more confident to share your views about contemporary democracy

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
