The so-called 'Northumbrian Renaissance' of the 7th and 8th centuries saw an unprecedented flourishing of art and learning. We shall examine in particular the Lindisfarne Gospels, Ruthwell Cross and Franks Casket, as well as looking at surviving remains of churches at Escomb, Wearmouth and Jarrow.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to 'Northumbrian Renaissance' of the 7th and 8th centuries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List some of the many and varied sources which contribute to the beauty and complexity of the Lindisfarne Gospels
  • Explain why this period is sometimes referred to as a 'renaissance'
  • Give examples to illustrate the contribution of Anglo-Saxon monasteries to the spread of art and learning, as well as devotion.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
