Day School: Women in Art in Britain and France 1850-1950

This Day School focuses on close looking at some fascinating and often beautiful work by Berthe Morisot, Suzanne Valadon, Elizabeth, Lady Butler, Barbara Hepworth and Mary Martin, among many others. We consider gender in subject-matter, artistic training and careers in context of 19c separate spheres and later feminism.

Course aim

The Day is aimed to a) discuss the work of well known and lesser known artists b) foster an understanding of the conditions in which women produced artwork c) look closely at images, enhancing students' enjoyment of art

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise some artworks by women working in Britain and France 1850-1950
  • Talk about women's art, at an introductory level
  • Have increased enjoyment looking at artworks

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
