Discover the lives and works of two great 20th century British artists. We will examine and compare a range of figurative paintings by Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Learn about their creative process, consider what influenced them and explore ways of approaching their work.

Course aim

Learn about the life, work and times of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Examine and compare their figurative works and consider how they influenced one another.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Examine the artworks studied and comment upon them
  • Relate the artworks to the artist's' lives and times
  • Apply questions when viewing an artwork in order to develop skills of interpretation and appreciation
  • Locate where to see Bacon and Freud's work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be encouraged to develop skills of art appreciation and evaluation.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to bring your own lunch or one can be provided by Ely WEA, to be booked in advance.
