The WEA have designed this course to use the key aspects of film making to help develop confidence, self awareness and general well being. It is a great help in developing the kind of transferrable skills needed by those seeking employment. No previous experience film-making experience is required.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to make a short film on a set theme using students' shared personal experiences.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Experience of scripting a film
  • Experience of location filming as part of a video filming crew
  • Experience of editing a video
  • Working as part of a team
  • The satisfaction of a YouTube film created through team effort

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The course is a practical hands-on film-making exercise, concentrating mainly on producing a satisfactory film as an end result. The emphasis is on FUN! There is no formal classroom tuition.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • A YouTube film which you can send as a link to family, friends and, if appropriate, potential employers.
