This is a One Day School where we welcome guest speaker, Robert Kendall, who will be delivering a fascinating course on Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Students will gain insight, understanding and appreciation of Mackintosh as a tectonic architect as well as the patronage and historical influences of his patron for 78 Derngate, W.J.Bassett-Lowke. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of specific German architectural influences such as Wiener Werkstatt, Secession and Bahaus movements- in particular the work of Peter Behrens/Josef Olbrich/Joseph Hoffman and examine the relationship between architecture and the avant-garde including an overview of the development of Modernism and Art-Deco in architecture and design.

Course aim

This course will provide students with an appreciation and understanding of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as a tectonic architect.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain an appreciation and understanding of the importance of Charles Rennie Mackintosh as a tectonic architect.
  • Consider the patronage and historical influences of his patron for 78 Derngate, W.J.Bassett-Lowke.
  • Gain an understanding of specific German architectural influences such as Wiener Werkstatt, Secession and Bahaus movements- in particular the work of Peter Behrens/Josef Olbrich/Joseph Hoffman.
  • Explore the relationship between architecture and the avant-garde including an overview of the development of Modernism and Art-Deco in architecture and design.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
