Life Skills, Moving on Together

Life skills is designed to support you in your job search and to find work. We will consider your desires and needs, skills and aptitudes and assist you to find work that you are suited for. The course includes: skills analysis; building confidence in yourself; finding a job - CV writing and applications, general and local job search skills; interview techniques; preparing for work- dealing with stress, returning to work after a short or long break.

The classes run as follows: Monday: 10am - 2.30pm (including 30 min break) Tuesday: 10am - 12pm Thursday: 10am - 2.30pm (including 30 min break) Friday: 10am - 2.30pm (including 30 min break)

Course aim

To assist you to get a job for the first time or to return to work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for people who are referred by the local job centre.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify your own skills and aptitudes
  • Modify your CV, and improve your CV writing skills
  • Discuss types of interview and practise interview techniques
  • Recognise how to access local job opportunities
  • Prepare yourself for taking a new job or returning to work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring: pen and paper, your CV, your library card (to access internet); a USB key if you have one your own device -laptop, iPad, phone etc. your lunch.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
