Day School: Mat Making with Rope

This is a One Day School where we welcome tutor Rachel Richards. Using weather resistant Hempex rope, students will be mastering the Ocean Plait, Monkeys Fist and Carrick Bend. Students will be using these techniques to produce a decorative mat, shapeshifting coaster bowl and ball. Along the way, we will be discussing origins, history and modern decorative and practical uses of these knots.

Course aim

Using weather resistant Hempex rope, students will be mastering the Ocean Plait, Monkeys Fist and Carrick Bend. Students will be using these techniques to produce a decorative mat, shapeshifting coaster bowl and ball.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understanding of the history of our focus knots and their uses both practically and decoratively.
  • Studying the technique and tying an Ocean Plait mat.
  • Studying the technique and tying a Monkeys Fist knot.
  • Using the Carrick Bend for decorative purposes and producing a shapeshifting coaster bowl.
  • Developing confidence in traditional pattern knotwork.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
