Supporting Your Child with Reading and Phonics

The course will look at the teaching of phonics in schools. You will be asked to try out some of the activities at home with your child and share your experiences with others in the group. Also, there will be an opportunity to look at different ways in which you can help your child to develop their reading skills, so they become a confident and fluent reader.

Course aim

You will learn about how sounds and letters correspond and how you can help your child to develop their reading, speaking and listening skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the way in which phonics is taught in schools
  • Explain how phonics can be used to develop reading skills
  • Use approaches to support your child to develop their phonic skills
  • Use approaches to develop your child's speaking and listening skills
  • Identify opportunities to link phonic skills with writing and spelling

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
