Develop Further Digital Skills is a course to help give students the confidence to use the new Universal Credit online benefit system. We will cover the skills required to get you signed up and accessing the features of the service. Delivered in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, this short course is a great starting point to help navigate around the UC platform.

All students will be referred onto this course by JCP and all students will be in receipt of a means tested benefit

Course aim

To give students the skills and confidence to use the new Universal Credit online benefit system, search for a job online, make online applications and upload documents.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Students need to be referred onto this course by JCP. Previous IT skills are required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Log onto a computer and access the Universal Credit platform
  • Log into my UC account
  • Access personal information and make amendments
  • Check my payments and navigate around the site
  • Search for online work opportunities and complete online job applications

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • This course is not accredited. Your increased confidence will demonstrate progress and your ability to complete tasks and navigate around the computer will show competence.

What else do I need to know?

  • Laptops will be provided but it is best to use your own device. Please bring a pen and paper.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No reading is required but you can look in your library or buy either "Web User" or "Computer Active."

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • You should feel more confident to undertake further study with the WEA or be able to search for job opportunities both online and in the local community.

Conditions

You can if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
  • have read and accept the standard terms and conditions
