Discover the life and varied artwork of Henri Matisse, one of the greatest artists of 20th century Europe. We will explore the multiple influences upon his artwork, from the impressionists to Islamic decoration.

Course aim

Learn about the life, work and times of Henri Matisse. Examine his wide-ranging oeuvre including drawings, paintings, sculpture, cut-outs and chapel decoration.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Examine the artworks studied and comment upon them.
  • Relate Matisse's artworks to his life and times.
  • Apply questions when viewing an artwork in order to develop your own interpretation.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to develop skills of art appreciation and evaluation.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to bring your own lunch or one can be provided by Ely WEA at a cost of £5, to be booked in advance.
