If you are a non-native speaker wishing to improve your knowledge of English and English culture, then this is the course for you. This course will help you to become more confident at greeting people in English and will provide an introduction to further courses available and qualifications. It will also help you understand your rights and responsibilities while you are living in the UK.

Course aim

Develop speaking and listening skills for English speakers of other languages (ESOL). Ask and answer simple questions. Learn more about the UK culture and Brexit, citizens’ rights and responsibilities

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Say hello and goodbye
  • Ask and answer a range of simple questions to give and obtain personal information
  • Say my name and address
  • Know where to go to find out more about benefits, the tax system and Brexit.

How will I be taught?

  • • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions • You will take part in a range of different activities with your tutor and the other students in your class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring pen and paper If you have studied English before bring along any certificates

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Progress onto an accredited ESOL maths or English

You can if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
  • have read and accept the standard terms and conditions
