Cake Decorating

A lovely course where you will learn how to professionally prepare, cover, coat and decorate celebration cakes. You will be taught how to do lots of new skills, and up to date methods of producing wonderful creations.

Course aim

To be able to prepare, coat and cover a celebration cake. Decorate a cake to professional standard. To do this you will be shown how to execute lots different skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • prepare, cover and coat a celebration cake to professional standard
  • Know how to handle various sugars and fondant
  • Be able to make basic flowers from sugar
  • Know how to do brush, and tube embroidery
  • know how to make free standing pieces from fondant, marzipan, flower paste etc.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring an apron with you, and if you have long hair, tie it back for class. Please let your tutor know if you have any allergy's

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • You may want to look at cake designs in books, or the internet to get some idea of design work.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

  • Lots of people who have attended a full year at these courses, then go on to make and sell cakes and take commissions for wedding cakes etc.
