Helping with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)- Primary Schools

The course seeks to enable students to explore the wide range of special educational needs and disabilities that children may have. Students will develop the knowledge and understanding that those working in a school setting will need to support children with SEND in a primary school either in a paid capacity or as a volunteer. Students will work towards gaining a Level 2 qualification which is suitable for those wishing to gain employment in a school, work as a volunteer or for those already working in a school setting with children and young people.

Course aim

To explore a range of special educational needs and disabilities, to equip students with the knowledge, skills and understanding to support pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, to understan legislation, structures and policies.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • You need to work as a volunteer in a childcare setting if you aim to move into employment for 20 hours over the duration of the course. If you are not volunteering you may need to carry out some additional course work.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the current regulatory framework in relation to primary aged children with SEND
  • Understand the responsibilities of mainstream and special schools to meet the range and degree of SEND
  • Understand the concept of inclusion when working with children with SEND
  • Understand current approaches to behavioural issues, including children with SEND
  • Understand how to offer support to children with SEND

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students will require writing materials, paper and an A4 folder to present their completed work. All other materials will be provided
