It Is very important to keep your skills up to date when in work. This courses looks at the core skills of English, Maths and IT and asks you to think about the skills you already possess and identify ways of further developing them.

Course aim

This course aims to help you recognise the level of English, Maths and IT knowledge you have, to think about the additional skills that employers are looking for and to identify ways you can develop your English, Maths and IT skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. State what your existing skills in relation to English, Maths and IT. These could take the form of qualifications, knowledge you can demonstrate to the tutor, or skills gained from working or other experience.
  • 2. List 3 English skills, 3 Maths skills and 3 IT skills you would like to develop.
  • 3. Research ways in which each of the skills above could be developed and keep the information for the future.
  • 4. Pick one skill you would like to develop and work on it in class

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • It is hoped that by participating in these courses, you will feel better equipped to move into the work place.
