Day School: Scandinavian Art

Ref: C2224743

Nature in the Nordic countries is characterised by its vastness, wilderness and remoteness. The light can also be exceptional, with the midnight sun and auroras. Unsurprisingly, nature is a recurring theme in Nordic art. From the 19th century onward, Scandinavian artists have created a fascinating body of landscape paintings. They reveal a variety of ways to perceive and understand nature, from the rational and empirical to the subjective and magical. This study-day will be a chance to discover artists and works often little known outside of Scandinavia, such as J.C. Dahl, Peder Balke, Marcus Larson, P.S. Krøyer, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and many others. We will conclude by considering how contemporary artists, such as Olafur Eliasson, have addressed this tradition.
